Teaching exponent rules are a challenge in themselves. Getting students engaged in practicing the rules has its own challenges!

Here’s a unique activity for students to practice the power rule and the product rule of exponents.

“This or That” Activity

You’ve likely seen “this or that” on Instagram stories…you know the kind…

Choose between romance or comedy, football or basketball, Chick-fil-A or Zaxby’s…

It’s a fun, social activity.

Here, we’ve combined This or That with exponent practice in a Google Form activity for students.

Practice or Assess

This activity works great as either an assessment (formative or summative) or for practice, enrichment, or remediation.

Distance or In Person

Because it’s a Google Form activity, This or That is perfect for students who are learning online.

I like the idea of presenting the activity on the screen (whether in zoom or in the traditional classroom) and doing this as a whole group activity.

You could spin students’ names to choose who gets to pick the next “this or that” and could also have breakout rooms or small groups in the classroom to work the problems out together.

There are so many possibilities, and you’re likely much more creative than I am!

Exponent Assessments

Need to assess exponents with something shorter and more direct?  These mini assessments can be used as formative (warm up, ticket out the door, homework, homework check, etc) or combined for a summative quiz.
